Concepts with a clear Design Language: Bureau Sebastian Moock
Concise typography, minimalist design language and strong colours – Bureau Sebastian Moock impresses with precise designs.
Sebastian Moock has already won several international design awards during his studies, including the STACK Award (London), the PX3 Prix de la Photographie (Paris) and the German Design Award Gold (Frankfurt). His thesis, ‘das typografische Manifest’, was a collaboration with well-known names such as Friedrich Forssman, Erik Spiekermann and Charlotte Rohde. In cooperation with Adobe, Moock has given courses on the topic of ‘Working Processes between Analogue and Digital’, and his work has also attracted the attention of renowned designer Ian Anderson at the OFFF Festival in Barcelona.
Since 2020, Moock, who is always accompanied by his self-designed talisman, the winged rhino, has been concentrating on typography, corporate, editorial, book, exhibition, graphic and web design under the label Bureau Sebastian Moock. What characterises his designs? “First of all, we live and breathe good design and are passionate about what we do. We get to the heart of visual communication in a focused way,” says the designer and avowed espresso aficionado, who coined the hashtag #Espretschioclock with his friend, product designer Erik Ulbricht.
“In our creative process, we consciously com- bine analogue and digital worlds to create new visual worlds. Our designs are characterised by clear typographic language. We consciously pay attention to subtleties and use microtypography to design even small details of the typeface, such as harmonising letter and character spacing, ligatures, etc. This makes our designs very precise and sets them apart
from other concepts. A good example of this is the font 100DAYSOFPERFORMANCES, which we developed in close collaboration with performance artist Simon Pfeffel.”
Moock has worked with international clients, cities, museums, ministries with research projects, artists and photographers as well as medium-sized companies. “We designed the book ‘Queer Archaeology’, which is now out of print, as well as the work ‘Edition 10’, which was created together with the writer Tobias Premper,” lists Moock. Together with Julia Katharina Thiemann Bureau Sebastian Moock designed the city of Ludwigshafen's cultural magazine PROUD and also the DGFG newspaper in collaboration with students of photography.
Several scholarships enabled Moock to realise his professional dream of becoming a designer. He wants to give something back and since 2020 has been supporting socially relevant issues and causes under the hashtag #Freesocialfriday.
